Volunteering as a way to both give back and develop yourself: Meet Peer Counselor Ebele

This post is part of our peer counselor Q&A series, which shares perspectives of our dedicated and talented volunteers about why they joined Empower Work.

Ebele works in government where she assesses and reports on the effectiveness and efficiency of government operations and services.

What inspired you to volunteer?

I have been learning that one of my passions is supporting people as they seek to achieve their goals and develop themselves. I also enjoy motivating and encouraging others. In the workplace, I have noticed I am drawn towards topics or initiatives around improving conditions for employees.

I wanted to find a way to tap into and develop this inclination, as well as learn more about myself. As such, I saw volunteering at Empower Work as an opportunity to delve deeper into my interests and give back to the community in a way that resonated with me.

How has the training or volunteering shifted your perspective in life?

I think one of the most noticeable ways training/volunteering has shifted my perspective in life is that it has taught me to more consciously recognize that I can bring additional value in a conversation. I have noticed on more than one occasion becoming aware of opportunities to actively listen and be present in a conversation – recognizing that this is a conversation to not necessarily just breeze through or give advice, but rather an opportunity to validate, acknowledge, and champion. It is still a growing skill but, in essence, volunteering has helped me develop more sensitivity as I engage with those around me.

What’s something you notice about those we help?

Something I notice about those we help is often they just want to be heard. They are looking for someone to listen to them and be there as they process what they are feeling. A safe space and a listening ear are powerful, and that is a part of what a peer counselor can help provide.

What would you tell someone about volunteering?

There are many reasons to volunteer. Perhaps you want to give back to the community, had a positive experience with Empower Work, or are interested in this field of work. Maybe you are interested in the organization, want to find a good way to use your time, or want to develop yourself in a certain area. I think these are all valid reasons to volunteer. If you are interested, I would say go for it! It is worth it. I believe this is a noble way to impact someone’s life, as well as develop yourself in new ways.

Volunteering has helped me develop more sensitivity as I engage with those around me.
